Program Facilitators

Bob Cornwall and Ron Allen, both are retired Disciples ministers. Bob is a church historian and
Ron is a teacher of preaching and New Testament. Last spring, they jointly authored a book for
Bible study in churches on the second coming and the afterlife. They are eager to descend from
the clouds to share what they learned.

Bob Cornwall was minister of Central Woodward Christian Church in Troy from 2008 to 2021. He previously
taught at Manhattan Christian College and served congregations in Lompoc and Santa Barbara, both in California.
An ecumenical/interfaith leader, he is serving as co-chair of the Disciples-ELCA Bilateral Dialog. He is also a
church historian and author of many books, including several that congregations use as resources for study,
such as “The Letters of John: A Participatory Bible Study” and “Called to Bless: Finding Hope by Reclaiming Our
Spiritual Roots.” Bob is married to Cheryl.

Ron Allen taught at Christian Theological Seminary from 1982 to 2019 when he retired. His
spouse is also a Disciples minister and they led a congregation in Nebraska before coming to
Indianapolis. A scholar of preaching and the Bible, Ron has written several books, including
some that congregations use as resources for study, such as A Faith of Your Own: Naming What
You Really Believe. Ron is married to Linda McKiernan-Allen and is the parent of five young
adult children (ages 41 to 31) and a grandparent for seven grandchildren ages 8 to 3 months.

PROGRAM TOPIC: Second Thoughts about the Second Coming

Although the second coming of Jesus is a major idea in the New Testament, the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) and similar churches have not given that idea much attention over the last
generations. At the same time many lay people have questions like, “What do we mean by ‘the
second coming of Jesus?’” “Is The Left Behind Series of books and movies the only way to think
about the second coming?” “What happens after we die. What happens in the afterlife?”
This program will introduce participants to diverse perspectives on the second coming and the
afterlife in the Bible and the thinking of the church down to today. The retreat will help men
consider “What do I really believe about the second coming and the life after death? What
difference do those things make to me and the world today?”

Presentations:

  • Friday evening, 7:30-8:45: “I Wish We’d All Been Ready?” Getting a handle on the topic.
    Biblical perspectives.
  • Saturday morning, 9:00 to 10:15. “But I thought the church had always believed . . . .:”

    from the Bible to today
