Registrations are now open to all Michigan Disciples local church members and clergy to attend the first ever virtual Regional Assembly August 8, 10 am to 1:30 pm.
“The covid-19 pandemic has caused major disruptions to the way we are accustomed to gathering,” said Rev. Eugene James, Regional Minister. “Because of the hard work of gifted volunteers, we will have a meaningful Regional Assembly online using the Zoom platform that will enable us to see each other and respond. Join us by registering now online!”
The Assembly, originally scheduled for early May was postponed to August 8 at First Christian, Lansing. However, a decision was made June 13 in a specially called meeting of the Regional Board to become a virtual gathering online via computer or phone, thus avoiding the risk of a large live gathering spreading the corona virus.
Worship, Business, Small Groups
The Assembly will be much like our live gatherings, only shortened somewhat. It will include an opening devotion, business of the Region, three break-out groups and a closing worship with keynote preacher.
Rev. Carol Devine, Minister of Green Chalice will provide the closing sermon and will also lead one of the group sessions earlier.
The business of the church
Business items before the Assembly will include approval of the sale of the Battle Creek church and property, with the income being received by the Region. The church title has been held by the Michigan Disciples since it began as a new church start. Approval also will be needed for a small piece of property adjacent to a Crystal Beach cottage that is a part of the Crystal Conference Center.
The business session will be recorded for archival purposes and votes will be recorded, using the Zoom participant polling function.
Also during the business session there will be an update on the Vision 2021 & Beyond Task Group that is engaged in a study exploring how our regional ministry can be most effective in the years ahead. And we will take some time to celebrate the significant ministry of our office administrator, Beverley Peeler, who will be retiring at the end of the year.
Reports by our Regional Commissions on Ministry, Ecumenism, Personnel, Crystal, Church Growth and Vitality, and Stewardship & Finance will be shared.
Small Groups will keep us engaged
Following business, we will have three keynoters providing helpful information for our local church work in three online small group meetings.
India Bobadilla, Vice President of the Great Lakes Region of Christian Church Foundation, will address financial areas.
Rev. Carol Devine will provide an introduction on Green Ministries of the Christian Church.
LaShawn Erby, Michigan Poor Peoples Campaign, will lift up issues we are facing in our culture today that are challenging us to live our Gospel message.
Worship to open and close our time together
Drawing upon Colossians 1:15-16, our Assembly will focus on the theme, “All Creation is Sacred.” Vice-Moderator Arnold Lakes, Sr. will open the Regional Assembly at 10 am with prayer and meditation, centering our time together.
The Assembly will close with worship and communion, including music by the Lansing First Christian praise band. Rev. Carol Devine will preach on our theme scripture, focusing on the fact that “All Creation is Sacred.”
Rev. Carol L. Devine is the minister for Green Chalice, the creation care ministry for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Communications Director for Lexington Theological Seminary.
