Disciples Camps at Crystal Canceled

May 5, 2020 Published by Neil Topliffe

Crystal Conference Center will not be the same this summer. The continuing corona virus pandemic has hit the Michigan Disciples camping schedule hard. All summer camps for children, youth and families have been cancelled for 2020.

Crystal Conference Center, however, is anticipating opening in July for groups and families.

“It is with great sadness that we share with you the decision to cancel all our summer camps for the 2020 season,” said Tim Murtaugh and Eugene James, Crystal Commission Chair and Regional Minister, in a joint letter to Michigan Disciples.

“For 101 years the summers at the Crystal Conference Center have been the highlight of the year for so many campers.  This beautiful facility holds an important place in the hearts and minds of the people of Michigan.  It has been a place of great spiritual enrichment.  We are justified in calling it Holy Ground.”

Cancelled camps include Elementary, Middle School, High School, Family of God, Grandparents & Me, as well as a Vacation Bible School Camp. Full refunds are being made to all camp registrants.

Conference Center reservations available for families and small groups

Crystal Commission still hopes to open Crystal Conference Center beginning in July for family groups and small retreats, but without dining staff, lifeguards and support staff except for Eric Strommer, site director. Missions House, Pioneer and Cedars Lodge provide kitchen facilities for groups to be self-contained.

Because of the cancellation of the camps, more dates are available for Michigan Disciples families to book a vacation break at Crystal. It is the perfect place to host a summer family reunion at the perfect time of year. For more information and to book a reservation, contact UCCR at (800) 678-5102.

The Crystal Commission and Michigan Disciples Region continue to monitor closely the status of the Corona virus in Michigan. “We are very conscious of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and we want to follow the latest health and safety information from our Governor’s office,” Murtaugh noted. The Commission is set to confirm current plans or adjust as necessary.

Crystal Conference Center, a ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Michigan Region, is located on the shores of Crystal Lake in Frankfort, Michigan. Crystal Conference Center is managed by United Camps, Conferences & Retreats (UCCR), a camp and retreat management non-profit cooperative organization with 14 locations across the United States.
