November 1, 2018 Published by Neil Topliffe

Central Christian Church, Grand Rapids was host this past Sunday to Rev. Mulumba, District Minister of the Kinshasa District, Community of the Disciples of Christ in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rev. Mulumba extended greetings from the Disciples in his country, with a membership of almost one million in 350 congregations.

The Congo Disciples of Christ Church has a long partnership with Michigan Disciples, going back to the first missionary hailing from our Ionia church early in the 20th Century. Mulumba was in Grand Rapids on a visit to North American church partners. We Michigan Disciples provide support to the ministries overseas through our Disciples Mission Fund giving and special offerings.

Eugene James, our Regional Minister was part of a delegation that visited Mbandaka in 2012 at the celebration opening a new medical clinic. Conversations have begun to consider a Michigan Disciples representative making an extended visit to our Disciples churches there in the coming year.

The Community of Disciples of Christ in Congo (CDCC) in what today is the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly known as Zaire was founded in 1889. The church has been affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada since its inception. Its 358 congregations serve 650,000 members.  The church has 6 general hospitals, 9 maternity centers and 42 functioning health centers.
