Regional Assembly highlights – new Covenant Partnership approved

With no dissenting votes, a proposed new partnership with the Illinois/Wisconsin Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was approved Saturday. The vote, taken at the Annual Regional Assembly of Michigan Disciples culminates a three-year study and discernment process toward strengthening our ministry of nurture and support for congregations.

New Regional Minister in 2022

The approval calls for the Rev. Dr. Teresa Dulyea-Parker to become Regional Minister in January 2022, when our current Regional Minister, Rev. Eugene James, retires. Teresa will continue as Regional Minister of the Illinois/Wisconsin region and provide pastoral and leadership support to the Michigan region on a part-time basis.

Regional Associates & Clergy Care Consultant named

Three part-time Michigan Regional Associates were named Saturday, each serving one of the current Michigan Districts. Rev. Bob Larimer will support churches and clergy in Northern Michigan; Rev. Peter Morgan in West Michigan; and Apostle John Harvey on the East side of the state. All of them currently serve congregations in their districts.

Eugene James and Teresa Dulyea-Parker also announced that beginning in the new year, the Rev. Amy Bertchausen will provide support to our clergy as a clergy care consultant. Amy, with 35 years of ministry experience and 15 years of supporting clergy and congregations, will be available for clergy supportive care beginning January 2022.

Sale of Regional Office

Assembly representatives approved the sale of the Lansing Regional Office which will take place in the next few months. Discussions are in process for Jessica Burton, Regional Administrative Assistant, to move to a new office across the street at First Christian Church. Meeting space at the church will be available for Regional meetings as needed.

Bible Study and Worship

Fifty plus participants joined in the virtual Zoom Assembly, including a period of Bible study, breaking up into small groups for discussion. “A New Beginning” was the theme of Pastor Eugene James sermon during closing worship and communion. Eugene reminded us, “As Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, there’s a time for everything, and this is a time for a new way of doing regional ministry; shining the light of innovation in the vital ministry of the church.”

Reports and Finances

The Assembly received reports from the six Commissions and committees. Sarah Beth Simonds, Treasurer, reported that the Regional church that income for the year 2020 was close to budgeted amounts in spite of the pandemic. The operating deficit was $17,777.

Ten plus years of congregational care and support by Regional Elders was recognized during the Regional Assembly.
