January begins a major change in leadership for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Michigan Region. With the retirement of our current Regional Minister, the Rev. Eugene W. James, Jr., we enter a new direction with new opportunities.
Three Regional Associates will provide pastoral care and support to each of three districts, working closely with our new Regional Minister, Rev. Dr. Teresa Dulyea-Parker. All of these positions will be part time with the three associates continuing to serve as pastors of congregations in their Districts.
Apostle John Harvey will be responsible for the East District. The Rev. Robert Larimer, better known as Bob or Pastor Bob, will be working with congregations and clergy in the North District. The Rev. Peter Morgan will provide regional pastoral support to clergy and congregations in the West District. All of them will be under the supervision of Dulyea-Parker, who will be serving as Regional Minister for both Michigan Disciples and the Illinois-Wisconsin Region.
Apostle John Harvey – East District
Apostle John C. Harvey, firstname.lastname@example.org, will serve the largest of our three Michigan Districts on the East side of the state ranging from Adrian to Saginaw with Flint and Metro Detroit in-between. “I received my call to ministry at the age of 16 but publicly acknowledged it at 19,” he noted.
His undergraduate studies were in Philosophy and Religion at Wabash College with a Masters of Divinity from Yale University Divinity School. Harvey also was named a Fellow in Pastoral Leadership Development from Princeton Theological Seminary.
He founded Serenity Christian Church in 1994 and in 1995 also accepted the call to be Director of United Campus Ministry at Wayne State University which he continued until 2006. Serenity Christian, under his leadership, moved to its present location in Hazel Park in 2008
Apostle Harvey is actively engaged in numerous community and social justice organizations providing leadership and awareness to important issues.
“The fullness of God continues to manifest daily in my life and that of my wife, Sandy,” said our new East District Regional Associate. “We are truly committed to ministry, mentoring, and demonstrating God’s love.”
Pastor Bob Larimer – North District
Pastor Bob Larimer, email@example.com, will give support to Disciples churches and clergy in the North District from Cadillac to Burt Lake and others in-between. He has been serving the Blaine congregation for 21 years. He’s a second career pastor, formally a business owner, plant manager and electrician. He’s also a third-generation member of the Disciples of Christ with wife Deb being fourth-generation Disciples. Now that’s worth a tip of the hat to Alexander and Thomas Campbell, and Barton Stone, our church founders!
Pastor Bob is a graduate of Western Michigan University and Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis. He has been married to wife Deb for 40 years, has two married children and “six amazing grandchildren!”
“Our faith in Jesus Christ is first and foremost in our lives and central to all that we do,” shared our new North District Regional Associate.
Rev. Peter Morgan – West District
Rev. Peter Morgan, firstname.lastname@example.org, will provide pastoral care and support to clergy and congregations on the West side of the state in the West District. It includes congregations from Fremont south to the state line and from Lansing to Lake Michigan. He currently serves part-time as Cowden Lake’s Senior Minister.
Pastor Peter was born and raised in the Lansing area where he was a member of First Christian Church. He is a graduate of Calvin College with a major in American History and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. He was ordained here in Michigan in 2007.
“I have worked and served in congregations across Michigan including First Christian, Manton, as student minister, and First Christian Petosky as youth minister,” Morgan said. He also served as Senior Minister for almost 10 years at Flemingsburg Christian Church in Kentucky.
Peter is married and he and Sarah have two daughters.
Responsibilities of Regional Minister and Regional Associates
Rev. Teresa Dulyea-Parker, email@example.com, will retain responsibility in working with congregations in the search and call of new pastors, overseeing clergy misconduct issues, as well as crisis-conflict management with congregations. She also will give administrative leadership of the Michigan Disciples Region, as well as the Illinois-Wisconsin Region.
Michigan Regional Associates will maintain regular contact with congregations and clergy in their District, build clergy support and facilitate communication between congregations and the Region. They will have contact with local church leaders and pastors. They will be able to call upon other clergy in the area to assist in supporting local churches, pastors, and other clergy in the District. They will work closely with the Regional Minister in supporting congregations in their ministries.
