… take heart … be patient, be vigilant
For me to say we are in the midst of turbulent times would be an understatement. We have never had every aspect of our lives impacted in such a disconcerting manner. The unbelievable number of deaths as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, the shock of the murder of George Floyd, the worldwide protests that continue, the economic hardship, staying in place, all of this contributes to feelings of frustration and despair.
To borrow a phrase from Thomas Paine’s “The Crisis”: “These are the times that try men’s souls.” He wrote these words during a time of war, but they are appropriate to the struggle we are experiencing now. Jesus gave us words of warning and comfort in John 16:33 “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
I know, like me, you are looking forward to gathering again with the members of your congregation for worship and fellowship. I’m encouraged by the many creative and innovative ways our pastors continue preaching and teaching as well as giving support to the members of their congregations in their time of need.
To quote from a favorite gospel song “We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. Trusting in His holy word, he’s never failed us yet” Be patient, be vigilant, we will come through this more than conquerors through Christ who loves us.
